As a survivor, I can say with utmost conviction that EMDR therapy and trauma writing saved my life (more than once). After meeting Rachel Erwin MFT during my participation in Eve Ensler's "One Billion Rising" campaign to end violence against women and girls, I embarked on a healing journey through EMDR and trauma writing. Five years later I feel so much freedom and wholeness. I've developed the ability to break destructive cycles in my life, set boundaries, and accomplish life-long goals. Beyond that, my personal story has inspired many other survivors to open up about their own trauma and start the healing process. There is a fine line between a writing workshop and a therapy session, but the two have distinctly different functions and client/practitioner relationships. Both therapy and writing can be considered healing co-modalities that inform one another in the process of personal transformation. Poet and Trauma Writing Specialist, Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, says of the healing writer's workshop, "We don’t tell each other what the writing means. We don’t try to interpret or critique it. We’re not here to fix one another,” but, she explains, “anything can be survived if it’s part of a story." In a sense, the writing workshop is a container in which we write these stories, discovering your truth, and therapy is the container in which to survive them, working through the mental and emotional challenges they present. That said, I am not a therapist, so all of my writing workshop participants are encouraged to team up with licensed professionals, if they aren't already, to work through anything that might surface during our writing sessions.
We are starving to connect with our inner light and share it with others, but can barely do that if we have unacknowledged painful emotions or repressed memories standing in the way. There will always be something happening to us or someone we love: work/life balance, illness, relationship challenges, etc. As we work through the layers, new dreams and goals emerge, and writing can simultaneously help us discovers those blockages and the beauty of our new intentions. Healing and personal transformation is a life-long process, and it can be a creative one if we utilize tools like writing to continually reinforce our self-awareness and self-compassion.
